Punjab Faces Severe Air Pollution; Lahore Ranks 2nd Most Polluted City Globally

Punjab is grappling with severe air pollution, with most areas reporting hazardous conditions on Sunday. Lahore’s air quality reached an unhealthy level, ranking it as the second most polluted city in the world, with particulate matter measured at 287, according to a leading environment website.

Within Pakistan, Kahna recorded the highest pollution levels, reaching 568 PM, while Faisalabad measured 338, Gujrat 300, and Gujranwala 296 PM.

The Commission for Air Quality Management attributed the worsening conditions to high moisture and a shift in wind direction, which prevent pollutants from dispersing and promote smog formation.

Punjab has faced similar crises in previous winters, with low-grade diesel fumes, agricultural burning, and cooling temperatures contributing to dangerous smog. In Lahore, pollution levels at times soared to over 80 times the limit deemed safe by the WHO, raising serious public health concerns.

Authorities continue to urge residents to limit outdoor exposure and take precautions as the province battles rising air pollution.
