New Year Cyber Alert: NCCIA Warns Public Against Rising Online Scams

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a nationwide alert ahead of New Year celebrations, warning citizens about a noticeable increase in online scams and digital fraud during this period.

In an official advisory, the agency said cybercriminals are actively spreading fake messages, phishing links, and misleading congratulatory offers to trap unsuspecting users. Many of these scams promise gifts, rewards, or cash prizes linked to New Year festivities.

The NCCIA cautioned users against clicking on unknown links or sharing personal, banking, or financial details online. Officials noted that higher internet usage during holidays gives scammers more opportunities to exploit people.

The agency also referred to a recent surge in WhatsApp account hacking cases. Users who suspect unauthorized access were advised to immediately uninstall and reinstall the app, then re-register using their phone number.

Once re-registered, WhatsApp sends a six-digit verification code, which automatically logs out the hacker, as only one active session is allowed. If two-step verification is enabled by the attacker, recovery may take up to seven days.

The NCCIA urged citizens to stay vigilant, follow cybersecurity guidelines, and promptly report suspicious online activity to avoid financial loss and identity theft.
